   About Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI):
A TBI is a blow or jolt to the head of a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain,
affecting a person's physical, cognitive, behavioral and emotional well-being.

The leading causes of TBI in Missouri are falls/jumps, motor vehicle traffic crashes, being struck by
a blunt object or by a person, and motor vehicle non-traffic occurring off major roadways.

1.4 million people in the United States and 18,000 Missourians of all ages sustain a TBI each year.

The lifetime costs for one person surviving a severe TBI can reach in excess of $4 million.

Each year, more people will sustain a TBI than will develop Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Cord
Injury, HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer combined.

Researchers have found that persons who suffer a TBI continue to make gradual improvements
in functioning for at least 10 years post-injury.

It is estimated that among American troops, 60 percent of all blast injuries resulted in a TBI.
